Donor Inspires New Program that Introduces Students to Islam

For Dr. Mohsin Jaffer, cultural understanding and an open dialogue about how we are all different, yet alike, is important. That’s why he funded a new interactive program at MDC that introduces students to Islam as both a global religion and a world civilization. A $75,000 gift from the Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation is supporting a visiting lecturer who leads various education and outreach programs for students.

Alumna Shares Secret of Living a Full Life

MDC alumna Yolanda Valencia says it’s not complicated to give yourself to a cause you believe in, with the greatest reward being the ripple effect that one gift can have.  Valencia spearheaded two new student scholarships last year through the fresh-cut flower producer Galleria Farms, and has plans to support more MDC students in the future.

MDC's Tech Programs are 'Work of Magic' (video)

Miami Dade College is equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for the tech careers of tomorrow through the Miami Animation & Gaming Complex, popularly known as MAGIC. Industry leaders like Nickelodeon and Fox Animation work alongside faculty and staff to ensure the curriculum is relevant and that graduates are prepared for the workforce. The Council on Foreign Relations recently profiled the success of MAGIC's work - rightfully dubbing it A Work of Magic.

MDC Foundation Breaks Records for 2nd Straight Year at 2018 Alumni Hall of Fame

While honoring a new class of community leaders at the 2018 Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Miami Dade College Foundation raised more than $2 million for the second year in a row at its sold out April 3rd event, also breaking records for highest sponsorship and attendance. The evening supported scholarships for deserving MDC students who will become the changemakers of tomorrow.

Hurricane Assistance Program for Puerto Rican Students Gets Major Boost with Philanthropic Support

Miami Dade College’s assistance program for displaced Puerto Ricans has grown significantly this spring semester, thanks to generous gifts totaling $400,000 from John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Florida's History to be Spotlight of 2019 Miami Film Festival Student Competition

Florida’s rich history will be a focus of the film school competition, CinemaSlam, at Miami Dade College’s 2019 Miami Film Festival thanks to a new gift from the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation that supports the use of archival footage from the renowned Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at MDC.

Meet Dr. John Wensveen

Students are at the heart of Dr. John Wensveen's work at Miami Dade College in his role as Vice Provost of Academic Schools. He oversees the direction of the College's professional education programs and serves as the bridge between the College and industry, ensuring students are prepared to enter the workforce. Dr. John Wensveen came to Miami Dade College last year, bringing extensive academic leadership to his role.
