Miami Dade College Foundation Announces I AM MDC Scholarship Awards
Miami Dade College Foundation announced 64 students have been selected to receive a total of $67,300 in scholarship awards. The scholarships are the result of I AM MDC DAY on Sept. 6, a 24-hour fundraising campaign that engaged MDC alumni and friends in the community to raise money for scholarships.
I AM MDC scholars will receive between $500 and $1000 to help pay for tuition, books, supplies and fees. Miami Dade College students were selected based on their academic achievement and financial need.
The scholarship was formally announced at “An Evening of Gratitude” honoring the College’s most ardent donors and introducing I AM MDC scholars, hosted by Brickell Luxury Motors. MDC Foundation Executive Director Mark Cole and Board of Directors Chair Julie Grimes delivered remarks at the event.
“Scholarships awarded to MDC students have an incomparable impact on the recipient and a multiplier effect on their families and communities,” said Mark Cole, executive director of the MDC Foundation and vice president of Advancement.
Several I AM MDC student scholarship recipients had an opportunity to thank donors firsthand for their support. “Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors like you who made the I AM MDC Scholarship possible, my life is about to change,” says Daniel Aguiar, who can now afford to leave one of two part-time jobs to more fully focus on school. Aguiar is an aspiring entrepreneur who plans to attend graduate school after completing his bachelor’s degree at MDC.
The impact that Miami Dade College has on the lives of its students was apparent with the story of MDC alumnus Mario Murgado, who also spoke at Tuesday’s event. Now President and CEO of Brickell Motors, he credits MDC with giving him his start.
Scholarships are the lifeblood of any academic institution. At MDC, 67 percent of students are considered low income and 46 percent live below the federal poverty level for their household size. About 79 percent of MDC students need financial aid and many apply for scholarships. During the 2014-2015 academic year, more than 14,000 MDC students applied for financial aid.
